In this post.. i will talk about different kinds of scamming cases and how to prevent you from falling into their trap. With examples!
1. Imposer
Some scammers like to pretend that they are someone you know or people with authority. Most of the time they will pretend to be your friends or gamemaster , and ask you for your password or items.
'FRIENDS'
Scammer who tries to pretend to be your friends will use other char to ask you to guess who is him. And you will always guess correctly in 1 or 2 tries even you have like 100+ friends playing the game. Why does scammer wants to ask you this question? The reason is simple. Psychologically, the people that come to your mind is always the one you trust most! By asking this question, the scammer will gain trust from you and this will help him to continue their evil plan. After he has gained your trust, he will chit chat with you for some time before they start to ask you for your items (most of the time). This is to prevent you to get suspicious. for example:
Scamming method A
Scammer: Hey you there?<= using whisper mode most of the time
Victim: yup
Scammer: Guess who am i:D
Victim: *types his friend nick*
Scammer: Damn, you are good! Btw, how are you today?
Victim: Ya i am great! You?
Scammer: i am great too haha! What lvl are you now?
Victim: *writes lvl*
Scammer: wow thats fast! Whats is the option of your set?
Vicitm: *writes the set option*
Scammer: Cool!! how much is it? Looks ex to me.
Victim: * writes down how much he paid* or nah i make it my own ^^
Scammer: Wow! is it useful? Can i borrow your set and try on a boss mob?
Scamming method B
Scammer: Hey you there? <= using whisper mode most of the time
Victim: yup Scammer: Guess who am i:D
Victim: *types his friend nick*
Scammer: Damn, you are good! Btw,can you lend me your set? i wanna try on a boss mob=O
Which sounds more convincing? Most of the time, the victim will fall for method A. What to do if you encounter this? To make sure this guy is your friend, tell him u are not going to lend him anything unless he can go into his main char<= meaning, your friend's char. However, it does not work against hacker turn scammer. For the best, you should ask him to give u a call. The scammer who tries this method is likely to know you or your friend. This means that you might have met him in game before or maybe he is in your guild or friendlist. '
GAMEMASTERS'
Scammers that wanna pretend to be gamemasters (GM) do 2 things.
The first one is similar to the 'Friends' method. Instead of asking you to who is him(erm may be he will do that too), he will tell you that he is GM and say you have won some shit contest or prize or whatever shit he can think of. Then he will want you to tell him or send your id and pass to him so he can add the prize into your inventory. Sometimes, he will also say that there is some error with the database in their side and they need your id and pass to set some shit up so your account will be saved.
The second one is you receive an email(and when u look closely, the sender's email ends with @hotmail, gmail, yahoo or some public emails provider and maybe some strange address that is 1 or 2 letters different from the offical game email) or a letter in game. For the letter part, the scammer will create a mute char with a name similar to a GM nick. Content wise, it is the same as above. The victims who fall for that can be consider as downright stupid. How can u get won something that you have never participated before? If you have won anything, the GM can add items into your inventory without asking your id and password. It is in their database! If there is really a problem with their database that all id and password are gone by whatever reason, they will post something on the offical website or forum or in game, and not to whisper or send u a email (using unfamiliar email address) or so. For now i have never seen any game provider failed sooooo badly (private server not included). If you got this kind of shit, you can reply them using fake id and pass to play with them. for example:
id:hello
pass: ujusgotfucked
id:heyscammer
pass:urbusted
id:fuckyou
pass:yourfucked <== if i am not wrong, someone did use this before^^
2.Friend/guildmate turns scammer
This is where scammers bring scamming to the next level...
The can be your best best best BEST online friend, but they just wanna scam your items. This plan can takes a month to a year. This is how they scam. First they will be your friend. He will help you whenever you get into trouble eg. Got ks, pk. He will be very very friendly to everyone, not only you. He can be like an angel in guild. After he thinks he got your trust or even ur guild trust, he will start asking you to lend him items for his char or new char and he promises he will return them as fast as possible.
However the promise never comes true. The moment he got what he wants, he quits guild=). You will never see him as well as your items again. Meanwhile, he will be playing new char or using some service provided by some DUMBASS game provider, to change his nick so that he can then again be your friend or get into the guild once more to scam. Even if you saw him again and complains him being a scammer, his friends (aka soon to be victims) will help me by saying he is too good to do that, or asking you if you have any evidence that he is a scammer. Even you have evidence (eg videos during trade) to prove that he is a scammer, his 'friends' will talk shit convince people that your evidence is fake. How to avoid this kind of scammer? Easy. Just never ever lend people your stuffs unless he is your classmates, real life friend. Why? so if they really scammed you, you are still able to meet him in real life and punch the hell out of them XD
3.Trader
There are basically 2 types of spammer in this section, namely trade hacker and trade spammer.
‘TRADE HACKER’
This is a spammer who use hacks to scam people, normally shadow hack. Shadow hack works by making a copy aka shadow of the item during trade, done by some hacking programme. First the scammer will tell you to trade him and he will put the item in the trade inventory. The moment you put your items in your trade inventory, he cancel trade. This is to create a 'shadow'. He will then ask you to invite trade. You will see the item in the trade inventory the moment he click accept the invitation to trade. Normally you won’t see any item in the inventory until he puts it in. And if you put in your items and click ok, you just got PWNED! You won’t see your traded item in your inventory. How to prevent this? Taken from Global MU online, when someone invite you to trade, always ask them to move the item in the inventory shadow items are non-movable. Even he did the first time and then accidentally cancels trade; tell him to move the items again. To summarise, just make sure he move the items at least once during each trade. The video below shows low shadow hack works. Well, that scammer got busted...well you will know^^
‘TRADE SCAMMER’
This is a scammer that won’t use hack to scam people. During trade, he will put the items in the trade inventory. However he will cancel the trade when either you or him invite trade again. This time, he will put a similar item, but with different option in to the trade. He might or might not rush you to accept trade as he gotta go. This is to make you listen to him and click OK. The moment you press the OK key, you just got scammed. In order to prevent you items get scammed, check if it is the correct item before you press the OK button.
Lazy to read the above essay-like guide and still wanna prevent you from getting scammed? Just read the sentence below=)
NEVER EVER tell somebody your id and password or lend ANYBODY your items (NOT EVEN JESUS!!), and also DOUBLE check during each trade!!
(1596 words) <= LOL
